The Hardship That Inspires Poetry

Being in the military gave us a sense of wrong security. Our life was easy, and we didn’t even know how easy because we hadn’t tasted hardship yet. Only when my husband had to deploy to Iraq, did we realize that the military had a different side to it. For the first time I felt scared for his life, and reality hit me that the military was no normal job. Going to the field was fun and all but going to war was not. It was real danger, real separation (in our case 15 month), and real hardship. Faith became so important, and the easier times prior to the deployment were appreciated with a gratefulness that didn’t exist within me before. Then came the time he got out of the military, and we entered another type of hardship, financial hardship, which was the inspiration for this poem. Here it goes.

Last A While

The sweetness of ease

When a roof and food,

is taken for granted

The sweetness of ease

No tears or pain,

You think it will last a time

Over and Over you wonder,

How long will it last?

The Storm is right outside,

With heavy clouds

Drops after drops are falling,

No ease is taken for granted

The heart cries out,

To it’s maker knowing that

After hardship comes ease Insh Allah
